WORK IN PROGRESS

2018 was the year of the arts at Utah State University. NEHMA's sponsored event was participating in the "Work in Progress" mural as created by two artists out of Salt Lake City, UT, Jann Haworth and Liberty Blake.

The idea behind the mural is to create a collage of women who have made some contribution to their specific field-throughout all of history. Not only does every viewer instantly recognize and connect with someone within the mural, but many people have been a part of the creation process.

The two artists have taken this idea and created additional panels with scholars, athletics, academics, celebrities, and students throughout the country. They have spoken at the TED women's conference twice now and created panels at the most recent conference as well as at BYU and now USU.

Professors and students from every college on campus participated in a multiple day workshop to create their portion of the collage. I had the privilege to make a portrait as well.

About two months after the workshop, the panels were completed and the mother-daughter duo artists returned to Logan to unveil the finished product. A panel of the participants shared their confidence building experience with the process of the work and spoke of their emotional and academic attachment with the women they chose to recreate.

It was an honor to witness and participate with this never-ending work and meet the artists who were changing people's minds about what fine art is.
